DNE Apprenticeships

An apprenticeship is a paid job where the employee learns and gains valuable skilled experiences. Alongside job training, apprentices spend a portion of their time completing course work with a college or university which can provide them with a recognised qualification either in person or online. Apprenticeships are flexible and can be conducted in block training or in a workplace setting.

DNE Apprenticeship opportunities

Do you want to be an integral part of maintaining national security now and in the future, whilst developing your skills and career within the Nuclear sector? Then these apprenticeship programmes could be the opportunity you are looking for! This is a genuinely exciting time to join the Ministry of Defence (MOD) as an apprentice if you want to be at the heart of real Defence issues. You will get to work on a high profile and distinctive portfolio which is rarely out of the news and have a unique insight into the captivating world of nuclear. 

Within the DNE, there is a range of apprenticeship schemes that provide the opportunity to undertake a professional qualification whilst also gaining valuable work experience along the way and being in paid employment with support throughout the duration of the schemes.   • Apprentices will work with experienced professionals and as apprentices develop, we will give apprentices the opportunity to support some of the projects being taken forward by our current team of professionals, and we will assign job placements across the business that will improve knowledge and understanding of the wider Defence Nuclear Enterprise (DNE) and Ministry of Defence (MoD) business. Apprentices will also complete several work-based training placements which are Defence Nuclear specific while completing their vocational qualifications in preparations for their role within the DNE.

    The full apprenticeship programme takes 5 years to complete with training taking place at The University of Wales, Trinity St David. Students typically attend the University on a block release basis.

    Apprentices will be supported throughout their programme by a Training Adviser familiar with the sector, who will visit the workplace regularly, providing the link between the academic studies and workplace learning, and addressing any issues that may arise during the programme.

  • Project Planners work with stakeholders to ensure all aspects of the project are defined. The planner provides clarity on key milestones to define what, when and how activities will be organised to ensure the outcomes of a project can be achieved, with the resources available. They lead on all aspects of project planning, which will include the development, updating and monitoring of plans and schedules. They identify tasks, activities, interdependencies and outputs for the project and work with the project team to track and monitor progress against the plan throughout the life of the project.

  • Network Engineers are the integral cog of an IT system. As a network engineer you will be a protector of communications networks, designing and building them, keeping them running smoothly, you will master the cloud and support the people using them by giving expert technical advice. The apprenticeship will typically take 24 months, plus 3 months at end point assessment.

    Working as a Network Engineer will provide you with a rich and challenging career in Government and in the Digital Data and Technology (DDaT) and Engineering professions.

  • The responsibilities of the role are to support and engage with various parts of the organisation and interact with internal or external customers. With a focus on adding value, the role of business administrator contributes to the efficiency of an organisation, through support of functional areas, working across teams and resolving issues as requested. The flexibility and responsiveness required allows the apprentice to develop a wide range of skills.

  • During your HR Consultant Partner Level 5 apprenticeship you will work towards the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) qualification Level 5 Associate Diploma in People Management. The duration of the apprenticeship programme is around 19 months plus End Point Assessment

    Roles will typically provide aassistance to the Strategic Workforce Planning leads to develop and deliver a Workforce Plan that ensures the right people, the right skills and the workforce numbers are aligned with the growth of organizational capability. Assessing and analysing current policies that impact on the recruitment and retention of staff, looking for ways to make improvements. Development and delivery of engaging communications with schools, colleges and universities and internal apprentice, graduate, and development schemes to attract new talent.

  • During your apprenticeship you will work towards Learning and Development Consultant Business Partner level 5 and may be eligible for Associate Membership of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). The duration of the apprenticeship programme is between 18 and 24 months.

    These roles are likely to support the delivery of training solutions. Principle tasks include:

    • Working on a range of training solutions to meet departmental needs from internal departmental courses to sourcing specialist training whilst achieving value for money
    • Providing relevant training information to the business including Management Information and analysis of training needs
    • Handling day-to-day queries and providing general training and development advice
  • The role will involve supporting the daily operations of the finance branch, incorporating; budget management, in-year management and reporting, long term planning and general ledger management (including fixed asset reporting and audit support)

Opportunities have previously been available in Bristol, Clyde, and Devonport; however, locations are under review, and it is likely that a wider range of locations will be included in future recruitment campaigns.
